Their marriage was a double ceremony performed with a cousin of Gene’s.  They went looking for the preacher and found him working out in the fields.  The preacher married the two couples while they sat in their car by the side of the road.  This was not an unusual occurrence for the times. 

Gladys told the story of how during her childhood she went to school bare-footed and while she was at school it snowed.  Her father (Jim Smith ) came and carried her home on his horse.

Eugene & Gladys moved to Chester Co., Pennsylvania to the same area where his parents had previously migrate in 1928.
